Why choose game development?

I love making events and experiences more fun for my friends and family. To give some context, I come from a large family. I have five siblings, we are all close in age, we all shared the same interests growing up, and we were home-schooled together until middle school / high school. Not to tell my whole life story, learning how to come up with games that can include each of us was a fun challenge that I still engage with to this day.

Three years ago, I decided to swap from learning strictly computer programming to studying game development. This was largely inspired by my parents and siblings’ encouragement and from reading The Art of Game Design by Jesse Schell (I love this book).  My family knew this was the right spot for me even if my inner artist was not quite as certain.

I believe being successful in making fun and substantive experiences requires having a clear personal mission statement. Mine is to create life-giving, inclusive, and engaging communities wherever I find myself. I am doing my best to practice this mission in our esports and game development communities at Ferris State University. I want to leave a meaningful impact to benefit future students before I graduate.

I know well that, wherever I end up, I will have a lot to learn. The game industry is full of incredible talent that could help me grow as a teammate and contributor at any given studio. I will give my all to return any favors that anyone sends my way. I look forward to building many games and even more friendships on my paths forward.
